NEWS & HAPPENINGS...
Speaking of volunteers, many of you know Glenn & Maureen McLaughlin who volunteer at our annual Painted Colors Fall Trail Ride. They were also very active with the NEYPHC when their daughter showed as a youth. Check out the great dedication in their honor by the Belknap County 4-H Fair!
Maureen & Glenn McLaughlin
Maureen & Glenn McLaughlin have become a fixture at the Belknap County 4-H Fair serving as 4-H Horse Show Superintendents for the last 14 yrs. But that's not all, both Maureen & Glenn have a long history of volunteering. Maureen and Glenn are 4-H Leaders (Maureen - 20 yrs.; Glenn - 18 yrs.), members of the Belknap County Horse Council (Maureen - 10 yrs. as Treasurer; Glenn - 10 yrs. as President). You can also find them at the Lakes Region Horse Show Series events where they assist with the 4-H classes. Maureen is also a member of the New England Horse Council, has chaperoned at Eastern States, and has been a coach for Hippology and the Kentucky Roundup. Hippology you may ask? Why that's everything you wanted to know about a horse but were afraid to ask.
But their volunteering doesn't stop there. While bringing up 2 children (Patrick & Lynn), Maureen & Glenn were Assistant Boy Scout Leaders and Glenn later served as Scout Master in Pittsfield. Maureen also served as a Girl Scout Leader and the Pittsfield area Service Unit Manager for Girl Scouts. They have dedicated many years to their church as Sunday School Teachers and Diaconate. Glenn is also a member of the Church Choir & Church Hand Bell Jubellation Choir. How did they get into horses you might ask? Maureen had one grandfather that was a Ferrier and the other was into sulky racing, but she really didn't get into riding horses until she was an adult and used to ride at Highlawn Farm in Warner. Their daughter Lynn showed horses in 4-H. Shortly after Lynn graduated from High School, the 4-H Horse Show Superintendent wanted to step down so Maureen & Glenn stepped up. Maureen runs the show while Glenn performs much of the mowing and the horse show area maintenance. He's also a wiz with the welder (the fair mower deck has seen his handy work many a time).
Ask them what they like about the fair and Maureen will say "I like seeing kids smile when they realize what they can achieve. I also like seeing all the other animals. It's about the only time we all get together. As you see we revolve around the youth. It is all in making the next generation a great one. It is like that county song, „it is not the breath you take, but the moments that take your breath away ‟ . Just seeing their faces light up when they realize they can do something new and become someone other than that little shy kid.” If you ask Glenn what he likes about the fair he'll say "I don't usually get to see the fair, but I do like the indoor exhibits".
Ask Glenn how he got into horses and 4-H, and his response……."It's her fault".

HELP SAVE A PAINT HORSE IN NEED!
http://hungryhoundbakery.com/
I started the Hungry Hound Dog Bakery a while back after adopting a beagle from BREW which is now known as BONES. Susie was a great dog but didn't get to enjoy being a puppy. She was very shy and timid and I decided that she deserved to be spoiled. I enjoyed making treats for her and thought it would be fun to try the business. There was a time that I volunteered for an organization whose purpose was to help dog owners whose pet carried a diagnosis of cancer and was undergoing treatment. I did quite a bit of fundraising per se by contacting people asking for donations for a silent auction that the organization was putting on. I received donations from as far away as Sweden and Ireland. Shortly after the event, the group disbanded and I haven't been involved in helping any organization since.
After Susie received a diagnosis of kidney disease in 2010 and undergoing treatment at Tufts, I decided that after seeing the devotion of the vets that took care of her, I wanted to help they receive donations for one of their funds. I chose the Travis Fund (see description below).
Travis Fund for Needy Animals
The Travis Fund was established in memory of Dr. Stanley O. Travis, a widely respected and beloved veterinarian. The fund provides financial assistance for the care of found animals and helps responsible owners cover the cost of unanticipated veterinary care. The fund is managed by the hospital administrator, with grants made at the recommendation of the animal's Tufts veterinarian.
It wasn't until I saw the the story about Cajun on the news being care for at Tufts that I thought I would like to try to help the Kass family receive donations to help defray the cost of Cajun's care. I can't imagine what they went through losing their home, barn, horse and the injury Cajun received. I've never experienced a tornado or any other type of devastating event. I have been sewing dog collars and plan on putting some in a consignment shop and asking local pet stores if I can put some in their store. I have also emailed various other people with pet sites or pet related products while looking for supplies for the collars and asked if they would be interested in helping the cause.
